What a wonderful decision that turned out to be! The ride over the Beartooth Mountains was spectacular!
Pictures cannot do it justice - just trust me, if you ever go to Yellowstone go in or out the Northeast entrance / exit. We then stopped in Big Timber and had a great lunch with David Noll - my good friend from 100 years ago. I am sad it was so short but so glad we made it happen.
And then began the long, long trek to Glacier. The good news - it was all flat and all open roads. I was doing 80 mph and getting passed. I got a funny feeling when I drove past a cop at 80 mph and he didn't even flinch (speed limit was 75 mph). The bad news - it was 520 miles total. It was a long day. And a hats off to my travel mate Beth - she was into it the whole way! It was long but our enthusiasm never waned and we thought of it as an adventure the wile way. We even stopped to have a Starbucks at 350 miles to celebrate our good fortune!
And let me tell you something - and those of you who know me well know I don't say this very often - driving up to the Many Glacier Hotel at 10:30 pm was one of the most amazing sights of my life. Top 3. After 12 miles on a beaten up 2 lane driveway through weeds and stumps and over mud and dirt (I was wondering if I had made a wrong turn a dozen times), to then come around the corner and see the hotel beautifully lit up and the lake and the Glacier Mountauns barged in the light if the full moon... breathtaking. All my pictures were black. You just have to come and see it yourself.
My God, this place is humbling and magnificent. I can't wait for tomorrow to explore this park.
